Parts of Speech
1.Noun - is a member of a large, open lexical category whose members can occur as the main word in the subject of a clause, the object of a verb, or the object of a preposition.Example:
- The cat sat on the mat.
- Please hand in your assignments by the end of the week.
- Cleanliness is next to godliness.
- George Washington was the first president of the United States of America.
2. Verbs - A verb is an action word or doing word.
Example:
James ran quickly
3. Pronoun - A pronoun is a word that is used in place of a noun.
Example:
- Who says so?
- That reminds me of something.
- He looked at them.
- I love you.
4. Adjective - is a word whose main syntactic role is to modify a noun or pronoun, giving more information about the noun or pronoun's referent.
Example:
That is a tall building.
5. Adverb - It is any word that modifies any other part of language: verbs, adjectives (including numbers),clauses, sentence and other adverbs, except for nouns; modifiers of nouns are primarily determiners and adjectives.
Example:
- The waves came in quickly over the rocks.
6. Conjunction - a conjunction is a word that combines 2 parts of a sentence.
- for: indicates reason (used as a synonym of 'because'), or purpose
- and: used to connect words, phrases, or clauses
- nor: presents an alternate negative idea
- but: indicates a contrast or exception
- or: presents opinions, alternates, or substitutes for ideas of equal importance
- yet: connects ideas that follow logically and are contrary
- so: shows the consequences of related ideas
7. Preposition - A preposition is a word that shows relationships between words.
Example:
The cat sleeps on the sofa
8. Interjection - A interjection is the word that expresses Emotions. An Interjection often starts a sentence but it can be contained within a sentence or can stand alone.
Example:
Oh, Wow, Hurray, uhh, ah, and eh.
